The transport of dangerous goods, poses risks of significant accidents. It should be ensured that such transport is carried out in the best possible conditions of safety, minimizing the risk of accidents and improving quality levels of those transport.
To facilitate the transport of dangerous goods operations, international rules were created for each mode of transport.
Thus we have:
- Road Mode - European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR)
- Rail Mode – Regulation concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail (RID)
- Maritime Mode – International Maritime Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods (IMDG) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
- Air Mode – Technical Instructions (TI) for Air Transport of Dangerous Goods of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA)
- Inland waterways - European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods on Inland Waterways (ADN).
In the case of road (ADR) and rail (RID) modes of transport, companies whose activity includes dangerous goods dispatch or transport operations, or packaging, loading, filling or unloading operations connected with such transport, must appoint one or more Safety Advisers, responsible for helping to prevent the risks inherent in such activities with regard to persons, property and the environment.
